What is Conscious Sedation?
With a medication called Triazolam (Halcion), you can become so relaxed and sleepy that you may not even remember your dental appointment. Unlike general anesthesia, you are still conscious, which is a significant safety factor, because you can breathe on your own and all of your protective reflexes are still present. But you are sedated, meaning that, if you let yourself go, you can become unaware of your surroundings and can wake up when it is done.
Not only is this technique excellent for patients who have dental fears, it is also excellent for people who need extensive dental work, because it enables Dr. Kagan to complete extensive treatment in one visit—treatment that would ordinarily require multiple appointments.
